CITYCAMP MINDSTORMS NXT

CityCAMP Mindstorms NXT programming robotics course

Like its WeDo counterpart, the CityCAMP NXT lesson plan is designed around robots and modern urban technology. Building and programming 12 models will inspire young engineers to dream up ideas that could improve life in a modern city.

VENDING MACHINE

This construction is based on a vending machine found at bus stops or a machine which dispenses items such as snacks. Just like the real thing, the model dispenses the specified item. Clever mechanisms not only deliver the goods to the destined place, but also secure that they are disposed in the right amount. Our vending machine model is an opportunity to get to know the principles of how such a machine is designed, and also gives us a moment to think about increasing automation in modern cities.

motorcycle CityCAMP NXT

MOTORCYLE

The basic element of this unique construction is the motorcycle model that jumps off a special ramp. The motorcycle is powered by the motor connected with a transmission system and a transmission shaft. The robot includes a touch sensor for stopping and starting the motor, as well as a distance sensor, which can count the jumps performed. During the lesson, one could review the most interesting two-wheelers, together with the changes introduced to their design over time.

solar plant CityCAMP NXT

SOLAR PLANT

This is a model of a solar power station transforming radiation energy into electricity. Thanks to the color or light sensor, the robot seeks out the source of the strongest light and rotates the panels in its direction. To make all panels move at the same time, intricate gear trains were put to use. Their ratio is the key for creating a properly working program. Building and programming this robot is a great moment to talk about alternative ways of producing electricity and strategies aimed at conserving it.

helicopter CityCAMP NXT

HELICOPTER

In this helicopter model, one motor powers both the main and tail rotors. This effect was made possible thanks to a long shaft and a clever gear configuration that transfer propulsion to the tail. The machine is equipped with a distance sensor; its readouts determine the motor power, which equals the velocity of rotation of both rotors. The lesson is a great time to discuss advantages and disadvantages of helicopters.

SCISSOR LIFT

The construction consists of a platform, under which there are a height-adjusting module and a movable base on wheels. The platform is raised by a motor and several beams connected in the shape of an X. When the motor starts to work, beams fold together like a pair of scissors. This simple construction is a good chance to talk about different methods of using simple machines by people.

CRANE

The harbor crane model, like its real-life prototype, can carry objects vertically and horizontally. The turntable is the key element of this construction, as it allows the robot to revolve around its own axis. To make the model resemble a real crane even closer, it uses rope and hook to hoist the cargo. The crane is controlled by means of a smart lever, created with a motor and a touch sensor. The motor controls the power and moving direction of the entire construction, while the touch sensor is used to manipulate the arm. This lesson creates an opportunity to talk about various hoists, helping people to move even enormously heavy loads.

FORKLIFT

This forklift model resembles machines used in warehouses to lift heavy loads. It requires three motors, a touch sensor and a distance sensor. Two motors power the construction, whereas the third one controls the forks. The distance sensor provides the robot with information as to where it should stop to load the cargo, while the touch sensor activates the program. The lesson gives an opportunity to discuss with children how real forklifts work, how many kinds of specialized forklifts exist, and what is the short-range transport.

BULLDOZER

Bulldozer is a simple mobile robot that works similarly to the machines commonly seen on construction sites. The robot moves within a black circle marked on a special board; its main task is to clean up the circle by pushing all objects out of it. The cleaning can be completed with help of two long blades, to rake up the objects, and a color sensor, to stay inside the circle. This exercise serves as a great example of how a properly written algorithm can improve a robot’s performance. You can also discuss other machines used for ground work.

AIRPLANE

Bulldozer is a simple mobile robot that works similarly to the machines commonly seen on construction sites. The robot moves within a black circle marked on a special board; its main task is to clean up the circle by pushing all objects out of it. The cleaning can be completed with help of two long blades, to rake up the objects, and a color sensor, to stay inside the circle. racer CityCAMP NXT

RACER

This remotely controlled car allows children to play as race drivers. Because of the accelerating transmission, wheels of the racer move faster then the motor head propelling them. The remote control unit is composed of the NXT brick that decides the movement direction and the motor that allows the robot to turn. The racer can also be equiped with a differential – mechanism worth explaining to children. In this exercise, students have the opportunity to learn about various structural solutions in cars, especially those applied in fast cars.

WIND TURBINE

This construction consists of a tower, on top of which you can find a rotor with specially profiled blades, and a regulator in the shape of a lever. The speed and direction of the rotor can be controlled by a rotation sensor installed inside the regulator. The program for the model can be easily expanded by adding new, interesting functions. This construction creates an excellent opportunity to talk about wind farms using wind turbines, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the renewable energy sources.

DUMP TRUCK

Dump truck is a vehicle often seen on construction sites. It is tasked with transporting different cargo in its open-box bed and dumping it upon arrival to designated location. All dump trucks must be able to maneuver in very difficult conditions. Both models for Mindstorms NXT sets are controlled with buttons on the NXT programmable brick. This exercise creates an opportunity to talk about different machines that help on modern construction sites and various uses of dump trucks.
