CITYCAMP MINDSTORMS EV3

CityCAMP EV3 coding robots course

CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3 is a version of CityCAMP designed for the newest LEGO robotics set: Mindstorms EV3. The course focuses on how robotics and technology can make life easier in a modern city. This time, however, we build robots using EV3 new set of electronic bricks and program them with different software.

vending machine CityCAMP EV3

VENDING MACHINE

This construction resembles ticket machines found at bus stops, or snack vending machines. Just like the real ones, the model dispenses a specified item, depending on what the user chooses from the menu presented on the brick display. Clever mechanisms not only deliver the goods to the destined place, but also assure the right amount is given out. Building this vending machine model is an opportunity to get to know the design principles behind such devices, it can also encourage to reflect on the phenomenon of increasing automation of people’s lives in modern cities.

motorcycle CityCAMP EV3

MOTORCYCLE

This whole construction actually consists of two parts connected in a clever way. The motorcycle model follows a round track and is powered by a motor, located at some distance with the EV3 brick. The system of a driveshaft with bevel gear trains transmits the power straight to the motorcycle. The distance sensor can automatically count the number of completed laps. During the lesson, one could review the most interesting two-wheelers, together with the changes introduced to their design over time.

solar plant CityCAMP EV3

SOLAR PLANT

This is a model of a solar power station transforming radiation energy into electricity. Thanks to the color sensor, the robot seeks out the source of the strongest light and rotates the panels in its direction. To make all panels move at the same time, intricate gear trains were put to use. Their ratio is the key for creating a properly working program. Building and programming this robot is a great moment to talk about alternative ways of producing electricity and strategies aimed at conserving it.

helicopter CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

HELICOPTER

The helicopter model, exactly like its real-life equivalent, uses intricately designed gear configuration to power both the main and the tail rotor. Their cooperation is essential to precisely control any aircraft, regardless of whether it is an enormous heavy-lift helicopter with two horizontal rotors (EV3 Education), or a lightweight scouting helicopter with a tail rotor (EV3). The machine is equipped with a distance sensor, which detects how far the ground is and sets the rotor velocity accordingly. The lesson is a great time to discuss advantages and disadvantages of helicopters, as well as their diverse uses.

SCISSOR LIFT

The construction consists of a platform, under which there’s a height-adjusting module and a movable base on wheels. The platform is raised by a motor and several beams connected together in the shape of an X. When the motor starts to work, beams fold like a pair of scissors. This simple construction is a good chance to talk about different methods of using simple machines by people.

crane CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

CRANE

The harbor crane model, like its real-life prototype, can carry objects vertically and horizontally. The turntable is the key element of this construction, as it allows the robot to revolve around its own axis. To make the model resemble a real crane even closer, it uses rope and hook to hoist the cargo. The crane is controlled by means of an infrared remote, or with the EV3 brick panel. This lesson creates an opportunity to talk about various hoists, helping people to move even enormously heavy loads.

racer CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

RACER

This remotely controlled car allows children to play as race drivers. Like in most sport cars, the power from the motor is transferred to the rear axle, which is possible by means of a gear train. The front axle can turn and it’s possible to control it either with the motor that’s coupled with it (EV3), or with the tilt sensor (EV3 Edu). Other car design solutions are also worth mentioning, especially if they involve sport cars. Shapes of the robot prepared for each EV3 set differ significantly: the first one resembles an agile rally car, the other looks more like an American dragster.

WIND TURBINE

This construction consists of a tower, on top of which is a rotor with specially profiled blades, and a regulator in the shape of a lever. The speed and direction of the rotor can be controlled by a rotation sensor installed inside the regulator. The program for the model can be easily expanded by adding new, interesting functions. This construction creates an excellent opportunity to talk about wind farms using wind turbines, their advantages and disadvantages, as well as the renewable energy sources.

dump truck CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

DUMP TRUCK

Dump truck is a vehicle often seen on construction sites. It is tasked with transporting various cargo in its open-box bed and dumping it upon arrival to designated location. Dump trucks must be able to maneuver in very difficult conditions, which is achieved either by using a caterpillar track (EV3 Edu), or an articulated construction (EV3). The model is controlled remotely with the LEGO IR controller, or with buttons on the EV3 brick. This lesson creates an opportunity to talk about different machines that prove helpful on modern construction sites and various uses of dump trucks.

forklift CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

FORKLIFT

This forklift truck model resembles machines used in warehouses to lift heavy loads. It requires three motors, a touch sensor and a distance sensor. Two motors power the construction, whereas the third one controls the forks. The distance sensor provides the robot with information as to where it should stop to load the cargo, while the touch sensor activates the program. The lesson gives an opportunity to discuss with children how real forklifts work, how many kinds of specialized forklifts exist, and what is the short-range transport.

bulldozer CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

BULLDOZER

Bulldozer is a simple mobile robot that works similarly to the machines commonly seen on construction sites. The robot moves within a black circle marked on a special board; its main task is to clean up the circle by pushing all objects out of it. The cleaning can be completed with help of two long blades (to rake up the objects) and a color sensor (to stay inside the circle). This exercise serves as a great example of how a properly written algorithm can improve a robot’s performance. You can also discuss other machines used for ground work.

airplane CityCAMP Mindstorms EV3

AIRPLANE

The airplane model fits the definition of a modest flight simulator. It consists of an airplane model and a platform, around which the airplane revolves. The operator can adjust the altitude – depending on the version, it can be arranged either by using the infrared remote (EV3) or the buttons on the EV3 brick (EV3 Edu). Both models have interesting mechanical solutions that are worth explaining during the class. They also offer a good excuse to talk about the laws of physics that make flying possible. The building instruction for the EV3 set includes obstacles that can be used to organize a personal Air Show.
