EXERCISES

manipulator DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

MANIPULATOR

Manipulator is a precise robotic arm with a surprisingly wide range of applications. You can notice similar devices in factories, in laboratories and even on other robots. This manipulator is tasked with picking up and transporting a colofrul ball to another place. It can be controlled with buttons of the NXT brick (to rotate the arm) and a lever with the rotation sensor (to lift and lower the arm). Working with the manipulator is a great way to show children technical advancements used on the factory production lines and roles of the modern manipulators.

bridge layer DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

BRIDGE LAYER

This vehicle is equipped with a portable bridge that can be set over a precipice. It moves on a set of caterpillar tracks that provide stability and good gripping on any type of surface. The distance sensor is aimed towards the ground and is used to detect any chasm it might be approaching. Upon detection, the robot stops, sets the bridge up and use it to move over the deep. The width of the bridge can be adjusted. During this exercise we can talk about tanks and other types of tracked vehicles.

anemometer DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

ANEMOMETER

Anemometer is a device used by meteorologists to measure the speed of wind. This robot is using a set of three cone-shaped cups fixed on a rotor – the harder you blow at them, the faster the rotor will move. Rotations are counted with a color sensor. This exercise is a great opportunity to talk about climate, weather and its major components.

pin counter DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

PIN COUNTER

This robot is tasked with accurately counting all pins that are in its container. Sophisticated gearing and a piston are used to vibrate the container. Pins within are being moved to a special gutter equipped with color sensor, which detects their color and counts each pin that goes through. A pin counter is another robot used to relieve people from performing arduous tasks that require focus. While building this machine we often talk about the history of industry and innovations adopted on production lines in the last century.

conveyor DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

CONVEYOR

The conveyor is a simple machine; like the mythological Sisyphus, it moves a small ball to the top of a gully, just to let it roll down; then, it lifts the ball up again. The entire process is controlled by a color sensor, which detects the presence of the ball in the conveyor bucket. The NXT brick counts each repetition and displays it on the screen. This exercise encourages discussions about conveyor belts and various automated production systems that rely on numerous machines to perform simple, repetitive tasks.

flight simulator DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

FLIGHT SIMULATOR

This model allows you to control a small helicopter. Two motors are used in this construction – one to power the rotor, another to lower and raise the helicopter itself. By using a small joystick made from a touch sensor, you can control the actions performed by the model. During the exercise, it’s worth talking about pilot training and how machines are used for specialised education.

vehicle DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

VEHICLE

Vehicle is a simple mobile robot that rolls on two large wheels. Another element in its base is the ball caster, which ensures stability of the entire robot. This model is a perfect introduction to building and programming mobile robots. Its principal task is to drive past an obstacle without colliding – with help of a well-written program. The design of this robot leaves much space for creative use of different sensors and experimentation in general. During construction, we discuss different types of autonomously wheeled vehicles and their most recognizable features.

music box DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

MUSIC BOX

Music Box is a unique robot that changes the LEGO Mindstorms NXT set into a musical instrument. One motor makes the color sensor revolve around the axis of the robot with a fixed speed. The program for this robot makes the NXT brick play a specific tone, on the condition that the sensor detects a particular color. That way, by placing colourful bricks around the robot in different patterns, you can create simple melodies. This unique construction gives us a great opportunity to talk about different sound characteristics like pitch or timbre, methods of recording music (on paper, vinyl disc, hard drive etc). You can also talk about various automated devices created for playing music.

tester DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

TESTER

Tester is a robot that uses color sensor to separate items of one kind from others. The item to be tested is placed on a stand below the sensor and after determining whether the item is of the desired colour, it is pushed to one of two containers. Tester is an example of a device that helps people decide whether an item meets particular physical requirements, or not. During the lesson, children will learn about different testers and gauges that are much better than humans in judging physical qualities of an item, and about situations, in which a human expert is indispensable.

mazebot DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

MAZEBOT

Mazebot is a simple vehicle that can find its way through narrow corridors and tunnels. It stands on two caterpillar tracks, which provide stability and grip on every surface. The distance sensor installed in front allows the robot to detect walls or obstacles around, by means of echolocation. The mazebot can stop and turn, even in complete darkness. During the lesson, teacher can discuss industrial and natural use of ultrasounds, as well as other technologies enabling machines to measure distance.

launcher DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

LAUNCHER

The main element of this device is a rotating launcher that can be controlled with NXT brick buttons. The robot is fitted with ultrasonic sensor, thanks to which it can precisely determine the distance to the target. In order to fire the projectile, you must trigger the touch sensor. Building the laucher is a great opportunity to show students different ways of throwing missiles that were devised over the centuries.

programs DiscoveryCAMP Mindstorms NXT

PROGRAMMING EXERCISES

This exercise focuses on programming. It requires basic electronic parts of the set, but concentrates on embedding and refining one’s programming skills. By creating simple constructions, students can expand their knowledge about the programming blocks they’ve already encountered. All constructions are designed to spark the curiosity of students – with simple programming, you can create a toy, a torch, or even a musical instrument.
